No Day Is Ever The Same

No Day Is Ever The Same

We caught up with Business Support apprentice Rebecca Dickinson to reflect on her time so far at Selenity (formerly Software Europe) and her experience of combining working and learning.

‘The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.’ Brian Herbert

When I got the call saying I got the apprenticeship at Selenity, I couldn’t quite believe it. I had been looking for an apprenticeship for a while and nothing seemed to suit what I wanted to do.

To say I’ve been here for over 8 months, just doesn’t seem real. The time has flown by and I have learnt so much in this small amount of time. As part of the apprenticeship, I am completing a NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration as well as my daily duties in the Business Support office.

Over the past few months I have definitely learnt more about how a business functions and what the different departments do to contribute to the business as a whole. It has given me the chance to develop my skills in various areas and build the confidence to voice ideas that can streamline processes to ensure tasks are being completed efficiently. The apprenticeship has let me significantly develop my communication skills, organisational skills and knowledge.

My time at Selenity so far has been full of different activities and no day is the same which is something I thrive on. Over my time here, I have been able to work with the Marketing team assisting them with the annual user conference which was challenging but helped develop my organisation skills.

A fun working environment is encouraged and in the summer I participated in our charity Bake Off competition. I dressed up to be one of the judges and tried my hand at baking which was a lot fun. Afterwards I didn't want to eat anymore cake for a while!

The phrase ‘earn while you learn’ is used quite heavily when talking about apprenticeships and I feel this is a perfect way to describe them. An apprenticeship is a great way to get your foot in the door of a company as well as getting some qualifications which can benefit you in the future. It is a great alternative to going to college or university for people who are not exactly sure what they would like to study or who would just like to get experience of working in a company.

I would definitely recommend completing an apprenticeship as it has greatly developed my skills and can be a perfect way to start your career. They give you a great combination of practical and relevant training in your job role which in turn improves your prospects for the future.

My experience at Selenity so far has been a very positive one and I hope to continue to develop my skills in the future.
