Investing In The Future

The New Year is often a time of reflection for many people.  It’s a time when you look over your achievements and towards your future goals.  For many people their career may often be high on that list.

Software Developer Holly shares her experience on pursuing your career goals and what it’s like to be part of a team that looks to the future!

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The question I imagine everyone has been asked at some point in their lives. In your younger years you reply; “princess” or “race car driver”, generally believing that it is a legitimate response. As you grow older you reply with actual professions; “doctor” or “lawyer”, or in my case “forensic scientist”, all very legitimate responses, but my thoughts are that not every teenager that says this is their choice of career path actually follows it – I know I didn’t. My point is that not once did I reply “software developer”, the profession wasn’t hugely advertised when I was growing up – I had no idea that it was possible! So I left school having no clue of what I wanted to do with my life.

Fast forward, 9 years on; after spending 4 years working for a fast food company and having my first child I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up (or now I have grown up should I say?) – a Software Developer! I went back to school at the age of 21 and set out to complete a degree in Computer Science, now in my third and final year I have been given the amazing opportunity to work in the industry, here at Selenity (formerly Software Europe).

I have only been working here for less than a year but I can already notice an impact on my life; I have learned a lot from my degree, but it doesn’t compare to what you can learn in the industry! Working at Selenity has increased my passion for technology, as their passion for the new and wonderful is slightly infectious. I was amazed when the new Google Glass did a tour of the office – a gadget I didn’t think I would get to try because of its whopping price tag! I feel privileged to work at a company who has a passion for working with up and coming technology, it is this passion which has steered me into mobile development.

Not only does Selenity invest their time and resources into developing businesses, but they have also invested in me, and for that I am truly grateful.
