How NHS Expenses has saved the NHS millions

A decade ago on the 13th August, Selenity welcomed their first NHS customer, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Over the proceeding 10 years we've brought on board over 200 NHS organisations representing 67% of the NHS. NHS Expenses now processes over £250 million of NHS workforce expenses per year, saving the NHS over £33 million each year.

We take a closer look at NHS Expenses and recognise how this ground-breaking solution has helped the NHS to save millions over the last 10 years.

1. Compliance

Claim accuracy is the cornerstone of NHS Expenses. Ensuring that claims are accurate is the key to compliance. The internal controls within NHS Expenses enforce policy compliance and provide transparency of claims to staff members approving each claim. NHS employees can clearly see what they can claim for and what their limits are and approvers have visible prompts for items that exceed limits or appear to be duplicates.

NHS Expenses provides the most comprehensive flags and limits feature for the NHS; providing a multitude of NHS specific limits, tolerances, and mileage rules which can then be tailored to suit each individual NHS organisation.

Last year 1.2 million expense items have been challenged by the Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine, which checks for policy compliance.

2. Business travel

Travel expenses are one of the highest costs to an NHS organisation, with an average third of the workforce claiming business mileage. This is one of the biggest areas where NHS Expenses has helped to significantly reduce costs.

Through the use of a unique mileage address look-up feature, mileage is accurately calculated in accordance to agenda for change and enforces adherence to local policy rules, in particular the deduction of home to office mileage when needed.

Reporting further on categories of business travel has also enabled further data analysis and costs reductions.

3. Data analysis

NHS Expenses reporting allows NHS organisations to report on employee expenses information quickly and simply providing a powerful analytics tool.
